But honestly, less is more. The truth is that the right tools and even self-publishing companies make writing and publishing easier and more enjoyable.

Google Drive is one of the most versatile cloud storage services available today. But Google Drive is so much more than cloud storage. Grammarly is an editing tool that helps you identify grammatical errors, typos, and incorrect sentence structure in your writing. Download the web extension and Grammarly will edit most anything you type in a web browser yes, it will work with Google Docs.

Inspiration can strike at any time. Capture those thoughts and ideas as they happen in Evernote. You can even sync Google Drive and Evernote.

I recommend doing this, especially on your mobile device. Every writer should have a notebook handy for random ideas and thoughts. This is the part that seems simple, but can be more difficult than you realize.

However, once you get through the process of actually writing your book, you will gain momentum to finish it, and eventually publish it. It all starts with an idea. Maybe you already know exactly what you want to write about. The best way to create emotion with your reader is to understand them. The key to producing meaningful content is understanding your reader.

You can do this by creating a reader persona — a semi-fictional representation of your ideal audience. When you set out to write a book, you have to think about your reader wants to know more than what you want to say. Make your book about the reader: what do they need to know in order to learn what you have to say? My main audience is marketers and business owners at small- to medium-sized businesses. They value real-world examples to help visualize what tips and strategies look like in action.

You need to write about something that spikes your curiosity, something that keeps you coming back day after day. You need to be able to stick with it through dry spells and bouts of non-inspiration. Your own desire to hear the story will be what drives you through.

It energizes me to explain complex problems in an easy-to-understand way. Inspiration for this project is what kept me coming back to work on it day after day.

Google makes it easy to research just about any topic. Have multiple ideas for your book? Do a search on Google to learn more. I performed extensive research before writing the manuscript for Inbound Content.

It was important for me to understand what content was already out there, which content was performing well, and most importantly, how could I make my book unique.

The process of actually writing a book and completing it will make this book a personal success for you, because of how much you will learn about yourself and your craft in the process.

Choose a topic or experience that you can write about quickly, with limited resources. The secret to getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one. With a mindmap, you can drill your topic down into sub-topics. It will help you get all of your ideas out and onto paper. Once you have mindmapped your idea , you should have a full page of brainstormed thoughts, ideas, and concepts.

This will come in handy when it comes time to actually start plugging in content for your book outline. In one sentence describe the purpose of your book.

A strong purpose statement will explain to readers why they should consider reading your book. This will also help you stay focused as you begin drafting your outline and writing your book. It will prevent you from straying from related topics, and going off on tangents. When you have trouble solidifying what your book is about , review your purpose statement. A working title is a temporary title used during the production of your book.

Identifying your book by giving it a name can help set the direction. Once you finish your work you can revisit the title and update accordingly. If you need help thinking of a working title, use our Nonfiction Book Title Generator.

Once I completed the content, I updated it to something more fitting based on the content I created. An effective elevator pitch should last no longer than a short elevator ride of 30 seconds. For context, 30 seconds equals about words. Having a prepared elevator pitch will come in handy throughout your book-writing process.

By doing partial out sourcing you can write the book in less than 20 hours. Alternatively you can write a few chapters yourself and other chapters can be written by someone else. Before you write a book you need the motivation and purpose to write your book. We have covered that in point No.

Once you have decided to write your book, the hardest part of it is to actually write the book. We have covered how to finish writing your book in point No.

You need to publish your book and market it. Here are the steps involved in the entire process. As Gerry Robert puts it — getting the books is easy, getting rid of it is the difficult part.

Once you plan, write and publish your book you think most of your work is done. You may have 2, copies in your hand. But how will you get rid of them? How will you sell it? Once you sell 1, copies of your book you can put a splash on your book cover design advertising the fact that you have sold so much — social proof works wonders in converting prospects into customers. I have explained the marketing process in detail in the last part of this post.

Yes you read it right. I will show you why his program is over priced and how you can get better services for a much lower cost. The program is a combination of mentorship, education, training and services.

I will give you cheaper and better alternatives to the above services which gives you more control with your book. You will save a lot of money and also you can publish pages and get a hard bound version.

The other set of services that he offers displayed above are mostly related to guidance, education and mentorship. I personally believe that it is not worth that much and that money can be invested in promoting your book, getting better designs, hiring a ghost writer etc. Yes, you will get some huge discounts from Gerry when you attend his seminar but still the price is not justified.

Disclaimer: If you think that Gerry program is worth it, you can go ahead. Some of his services are in fact priceless. I will let you make the decision. My post is mostly focused for people who cannot or would not want to spend that much but still want to get most of the benefits from book publishing. First we will look at the steps involved in publishing your book.

Then we will get into marketing it. Here are the steps involved in the publishing process. Cover design is one of the most important parts of your book. I would recommend that you start the entire process with the cover design. Even if your book has great content, the cover makes the first impression.

Here are a list of online services who will do cover designs for you. Update: I noticed that even Gerry Robert has used 99designs. You can check his listings on 99designs here and here. After a few weeks of publishing this article, they have removed public visibility of the listing on 99designs. At 99designs. There is a chance that he uses 99designs to get covers designed for his clients and charges a premium on that.

Once you get the cover design done, you can start publishing your book cover in your social media and blogs. You can get the cover design done even before you start writing your book! You can mention that you are the author of this upcoming book. You can also build an email list and send free copies of your books to the first people who register. They will help you spread the message and help you become more popular. You have to decide on the dimensions of the book you are going to publish.

I have decided that I am going to come up with a book that will be 5 x 8 inches Width x Height. This is the most common dimension offered by many print-on-demand publication companies such as CreateSpace and Lighting Source.

If you have images, equations and tables, editing is going to be complex and hence the person doing the work is going to charge you more. You can get these services at a far lesser price at freelancing websites such as oDesk.

ISBN is mandatory if you want your book to reach academic institutions and libraries. Though you are not looking for such a reach, an ISBN helps you look professional and not just any author who just put together a book in his free time. ISBN is not necessary if you are publishing only an online version on Kindle, iBooks or any other online platform. There are a few websites who have published the process for getting an ISBN number in India but none of them is very clear and there are a lot of missing information.

For now, I guess the best way would be to get the ISBN issued by one of the self publishing houses mentioned in the next part of this post. Also remember that you need to get separate ISBN numbers for paperback and hard bound versions of the book. You can include this bar code in the book cover design. An ISBN usually goes at the bottom right corner in the back side of the book. Just make sure to leave a free space in the corner for the ISBN number to go there.

There are many services in India and USA that will print your book on demand. The most standard size for printing is 5 x 8 inches. You can go with a paperback edition or a hard bound edition.

I would recommend that you have both with you. For purposes such as giving away free copies of your book, you can opt for the paper back edition. The above names are the ones I came up during my research. Out of them Pothi. I will be publishing a detailed comparison and review of all the above services in my future posts after I experience their services.

Here are some of the print on demand self publishing services outside India. If you are in India and want to use their service, remember that the books will be shipped from the US and you or anyone who orders your book will incur huge shipping costs. Mostly, more than the cost of the book itself.

You should also release your books in ebook format. You can find guides on how to release your book on Kindle all over the web and I too would be publishing one shortly. Converting your manuscript into. Marketing is an infinite topic because it deals with the psychology of the human mind — and the human mind is infinite! Marketing has more to do with the strategies than tactics. Tactics come and go but strategies remain. If you focus on learning the tactics, those tactics will expire with time.

If you learn the strategies, you can come up with new tactics of your own. Teaching you all the possible ideas on how to market your book is beyond the scope of this article. What I have tried to do here is give you a basic framework and a few ideas about pushing your book into the market.

There is nothing called marketing it too much. Whether it is selling a product, service or a book — marketing is not something that can be outsourced to an external organisation. Marketing is something that you have to do yourself and it starts from choosing what topic you want to write about, who will be the people reading your book, cover design and more.

I will be coming up with a post specifically about techniques to market your book and perhaps a book on book marketing. I hope you have got a pretty good idea about why to write a book, how to write and how to publish it.

A book project takes up a lot of physical, emotional and mental resources and publishing a book is an achievement in itself. Do not try to publish a perfect book — you will never end up finishing it. Publish a book and then make it perfect — it is easier that way. You have got all the information that you would need from this post.

You have got the why, the what and the how. There is no reason for you not to become a published author. If this post inspired you to write a book and you publish it, contact me and I will feature your book on my blog at no cost! If you had enough will power and patience to read until this sentence this is the longest post I have ever written on this blog till date! I am sure you will be able to write a book and publish it as well.

All the best! All the best. I appreciate your views and it certainly of help to many. Delhi and found your article very helpful. I am sure you have done sufficient research and I love what you have shared with us. India I feel is certainly cheaper when it comes to printing related expenses and I feel we may even have suitable cost effective talents in copy editing and design too.

Thanks for the various sites you have shared. I liked your language and writing style and look forward to your up coming book. I would like to start a blog and being the opposite of a computer geek I wonder if you can share in another article how to have a basic blog where I can share my thoughts. Currently I have a FB page where I share motivational quotes and videos from other sites. Thanks for your article it was very helpful.

Best wishes. Thanks Alexander. Glad to know that my post helped. Looking forward to see your first book. I have had a couple of people ask me about how to setup a blog and I am yet to create content on it.

I will add you to my subscriber list. Will ping you once I publish such a post. Deepak…you nailed it.. My book is almost complete. Shall need your suggestions to go ahead. Sachin Kantha Hi Sachin.

Glad you found the article useful. Please send me an email and we will take it forward. Nice article Deepak. Thank you for your article and such comprehensive detail about the Gerry Roberts Seminar you attended. I attended one of Success Resource seminars in London where Gerry was speaking, trying to get the audience to book into his Publish a Book and Grow Rich bootcamp.

They lure people into the seminar by offering a free event to see a number of different speakers who will help you change your life etc. I am a speaker myself, I refuse to conduct seminars where people get conned into other seminars to part with money. However they will not be sold anything, they will be taught by some of the best speakers in the world for 2 days of learning, the money generated being paid to hire the best in the world speakers.

The seminars that are conducted by Gerry or anyone at Success Resources are all about network marketing, each speaker passes on their email database to the other and you are just bombarded with so many emails on their sales strategy under the pretense of how it will improve your life.

Please i like to know the best video editing for mac, my daughter wants to open her own youtube channel an she is very stubborn and I do not know much about all of this things. Please assist us in which video editing software or app we should be using for a teenager that wants to do business in her you tube channel. Great tips. Thanks for the same. Few sections really enough to give me a jump start. Thank you for your great insight and help to open the eyes of new writers.

I have loved it. I have a question for you….. How can you help such a new writer to link him up to friends and companies who can buy the books? I have completed one book again and want to publish it independently. How can I begin to market it now? Please talk to me and make me understand this way of marketing. Thanks for your honesty and transparency. It is nice to know that there are still some honest people like you in this world. You are truly an amazing guy.

Thank you very much. Hi Deepak, really a nice article. You explained a lot. But I want to know that how can I sell a book directly to flipkart or amazon when all work like writing, editing, layout is done by me.

In simple words, I have got a printed book in my hand. How can I sell it on Amazon and Flipkart directly? You cannot sell it directly. But if you print your books using Pothi.

What if register myself as a seller on flipkart or i contact any other existing seller to sell my book, will it be possible in that case?

I am not sure about that. Oh yes, I forgot shipment. Anyways, If I will contact any existing seller than the shipment will be taken care by him only. I am looking for the best way where I can earn profit per book by selling on amazon and flipkart. Where rs is gone? Can you plz explain little about pothi in terms of getting royality and publishing package? I am not really sure about their business model.

I sell books for personal branding. So putting them on Amazon and Flipkart gives more reach. However when you are selling higher end books or information products for profit, I recommend you collect payment directly using PayPal or Instamojo.

This is great info. I also appreciated the Reply posted by Tahir Ali. I have attended a T Harv Eker weekend. Deepak, I need to set up a blog. And I need to follow your blog. Deepak, A great article which I have read through to the end — and plan reading again.

This us basically a primer for the novice on which our Hindu texts are and a little perspective on each of the books. Thereafter starts the religious aspect covering ten of our major Upanishads. The cover design, layout etc. Would you be interested in reviewing my book?

The next step of going commercial is to start so kindle etc. I shall be going through your excellent post again. I read your article and I am writing for major publication but I am wondering if it is possible or beneficial to write a small book for self publication.

You can keep in touch with the author there and ask your questions. You have to complete two writing tasks. Points to Apply in Task 1, Letter Writing x The topics of the questions will be of general interest, and no specialist knowledge is required.

For example, topics can include travel, accommodation, current affairs, shops and services, health and welfare, health and safety, recreation, social and physical environment. Notes are not acceptable. The examiner will recognize them, and they will not count towards the minimum number of words you must write. The examiner who marks your writing will not see the question sheet. A few key things to remember: x The 'tone' of the letter must be appropriate i.

Write an equal amount for each. The analysis task encourages you to look at the letter through the eyes of an examiner. The first letter is an informal letter and the second one is a formal one. Compare the tone and vocabulary used in each letter carefully. The first sample, the informal letter Last month you had a holiday overseas where you stayed with some friends. They have just sent you some photos of your holiday. Write a letter to your friends.

The photos arrived this morning in the post. They reminded me what a great time I had during my stay with you last month. Do you remember I told you I had an assignment to finish? Well, the deadline was two weeks earlier than I thought it was! In other words, is it written in an informal style? Are all of the points covered? Are the points developed in a logical way? Can you find any examples of linking or referencing? Is the vocabulary appropriate for an informal letter?

You phoned the shop but no action was taken. Write a letter to the shop manager. In your letter x describe the problem with the equipment x explain what happened when you phoned the shop x say what you would like the manager to do Sample Answer Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing with regard to an appliance that I recently bought from your shop.

On the 10th May I bought a new washing machine, and it was installed the following day. However, when I tried to wash some clothes, I noticed that the machine failed to spin during the washing cycle. Consequently, it leaves clothes wet but not clean. When I phoned your shop to report the problem, I spoke to an assistant who did not know the procedure for repairs or returns. He assured me that he would report the issue to the store manager, and that I would be contacted the same day.

That was two days ago, and I am still waiting for your call. As the appliance is under warranty, I am entitled to ask for it to be repaired or replaced. I have decided that I would like a replacement washing machine. I would also like you to phone me personally when you receive this letter.

I await your prompt response. In other words, is it written in a formal style? Can you find examples of style or tone? Is the vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter?

Why don't you? For example, words like 'hosts', 'deadline' or 'assignment' are not highlighted because they could be used in both formal and informal contexts. Tips from examiners! When IELTS examiners look at a Task 1 piece of writing, they have 3 basic questions in mind: x Does the letter do what the question asks? Or, is the content the ideas and information appropriate to the task? Many candidates get lower band scores in the test because the content and the organization of their writing are not good enough.

It is important that you follow these steps when answering a Task 1 question. The following steps have been demonstrated for you to write your first letters with more confidence. You have an important examination on the same day so you cannot attend the party.

Write a letter to the director to apologize and to explain why you cannot attend the event. Suggest another date when you could give your talk. Find it out by underlining the key words in the question. The course director of your previous college has invited you to attend a party for new students, and he has also asked you to give a talk about studying overseas.

You have been invited to go to a party and give a talk, but you cannot go to the party. To whom am I writing? The letter is to the course director of your old college. Although you know him, it is unlikely that you know him very well. The style of the letter should in this instance be formal. What is your purpose in writing the letter? Apologize for not being able to attend 2. Explain why you cannot attend 3. Suggest another date Step 2, Make Notes of Ideas Make a brief note of and ideas which you may like to use in your answer.

Look at the questions or the bullet points which you need to answer and budget your time accordingly. In the following box, a student has written some notes. On the right side, you will find an explanation of what these notes mean. Thanks Thank the director for the invitation Saw friends Say that you saw some college friends last week Imp. Exam Explain why the exam is important Date fixed Explain why the exam is important New coll.

Explain why the date of the exam cannot be changed Family well Talk about your new college All well there? Talk about your family Party details? Ask how everyone is at the old college Hope success Ask for details of the party Sorry Say that you hope the party is a success Will talk about … Say that you cannot come to the party and apologise First time Explain what you will say in your talk about Can come … Studying overseas Explain it is the first time you are asked to give a talk Say when you can come My tel.

Then organize them. Do you remember our notes in Step 2? Now, in the box below, you can see a sample plan which is based on our ideas and our notes. Each black bullet point represents a separate paragraph. Notice that not all of the ideas have been used.

Exam, Date fixed x Can come, My tel. Hope success Step 4, Write the letter When you have a map of what you are going to write, stick to it. By following your map, you will reduce the risk of making new mistakes. Just concentrate on what you mean and try to choose the best grammatical structures as well as careful choices of vocabulary items to best express your ideas and prove your language ability.

Now look at the sample answer below: Dear Mr. Loyds, Thank you for your kind invitation to attend the party for new students on the 29th of January. Thank you also for thinking of me to give a talk. However, unfortunately I am unable to attend the party. I am afraid that on the following day, I have my first semester economics exam.

This is a complicated subject and a good mark is essential for me, so I have to spend the day before studying. However, I would be very happy to give the talk on another day. I am available on the 5th and the 6th of February.

If one of those dates is convenient for you, please let me know. I can be contacted at the address above or fax or telephone. I hope that everyone at the college is well, and I hope that your party is a great success. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Amy Sanilar words Step 5, Check your Mistakes It is best to make sure you leave a couple of minutes to check your work.

Try to set between three to five minutes aside looking for and checking your own personal common mistakes. Many students get lower marks specially when the topics seems easy to them, which is mainly because since they do not worry about to say, they do not pay enough attention to correct grammar and they repeat their fossilized mistakes or errors.

Look at the sample sentences and phrases below. Write to the point and make it short and quick. How are you? Dear Annie, Hello! I hope things are fine with you. Dear Mr. Parker, I am a student at your college, enrolled in the cookery course.

Thank the addressee if Dear Ms. Lopez, Dear Peter, he or she has sent you a Thank you for your Thanks for the invitation. Dear Alan, Thanks for your letter.

It Dear Mr. Hendrix, was nice to hear from Thank you for your letter you. Explain your reason for I am writing to advise I must tell you about the writing you of the loss of my new movie I saw last credit card.

You have no idea course details. The Closing Paragraph The content of the closing paragraph depends on what you have written in the rest of your letter, but some possibilities are listed in the following table. I look forward to your prompt response. Sorry again! Please accept my apologies. If your letter is making a I expect to hear from complaint, mention you very soon. If your letter is giving I hope this information will I hope all this helps.

The Body Paragraphs Between the introductory and closing paragraphs, you will find the main body paragraphs. The most important paragraphs which carry your writing score are the body paragraphs.

The body is the middle part of the letter which contains most of the information needed in the task. Types of letters in Task 1, General Training 1. Complaint letters 2. Letters of apology 3.

Request or inquiry letters 4. Invitation letters 5. Thank you letters There are several standard patterns for organizing the body of your letter in an English style.

Look at the following examples. If this happens, you will have to choose from two or more of the above plans. For example, the combination of complaint letter which includes giving your suggestions as well. When you get home, you find that you have left a bag at the hotel. Write to the manager of the hotel and enquire whether the bag has been found. Give any relevant information about the bag and its contents.

Ask the manager to contact you immediately if the bag is found and tell him or her how the bag can be sent to you. Expanding the bullet points When you write a letter using your plan, you should think about how to expand the points you have noted.
