Windows 7 hard drive activity when idle

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. After last update Dec 11, on my Windows 7, next day today I boot up, there is very high disk activity.

Norton shows the culprit task being "host searching", a Windows component. Even after I stopped Skype and Norton, do nothing for an hour I can still hear the disk activities non-stopping. I also checked if it was automatically doing defrag, and it was not.

Just in case, I have disabled scheduled tasks defrag and backup. Re-boot several times and problem persists. Any advice? Sadly, no. It still does it, but I do see the Defender program spinning now as it occurs. I'll install my own anti-virus so Defender is disabled, that should solve the issue.

In reply to Nick Dich's post on November 23, We'll see if removing some other programs from running on startup fixes it. I turn off my machine every night. In reply to Ryk3ld's post on November 30, If yes, have you updated to Service Pack 1 and is the system current on all Windows Updates? Do this so we can see what you have there: What is your system make and model or is it something assembled from separately purchased components?
